Student ID Badges

All San Marcos CISD Pre-K to 12th grade students will receive a year specific student identification card (ID). The ID includes the student's name, campus, academic year, grade, and student ID number.

All students are required to visibly wear their 2024-2025 student identification card while on campus, attending any SMCISD sponsored function, or riding in any SMCISD vehicle.

Student ID badges allow campus staff members to quickly identify students, the campus they attend, and individuals who do not belong on campus.

SMCISD secondary students are only granted entry to extracurricular after school functions (athletic events, fine arts performances, community nights, etc) on SMCISD property if they are wearing their student ID badge around their neck; non-compliant students will be denied entry. Students will continue to wear their ID badge while in attendance, non-compliance will result in removal from the event.

In the event that a student misplaces or forgets their ID, they can visit their designated campus location for a replacement. The cost of a replacement ID is $5.00 to cover the expenses of associated supplies (card, lanyard, sleeve, and printing).

Students not in compliance are subject to appropriate campus intervention in accordance with the SMCISD Student Code of Conduct.

How do IDs make my child's campus safer?
Student ID badges are utilized easily identify students within the district and which campuses they attend. This allows administrators and campus staff to not only identify students, but those who do not belong to the campus.
The student ID also allows students to be quickly identified in the event of an emergency on campus.

What information is stored on the student ID?
The only information stored on the student ID is the student number. No personal identifiable information such as name, grade, campus, social security number, etc., is stored on the card - either via the bar code or the RFID chip.

How does the RFID chip work?
SMCISD student ID badges are equipped with a single passive RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chip. These chips do not emit any type of signal unless they come into close proximity of a RFID reader (≈1-2”).

Will the Student IDs be used to track students?
Student ID Badge RFID chips are not utilized for student location/movement tracking. No identifiable information is stored within the RFID chip. Each chip has a unique ID number which is compatible with SMCISD systems.
SMCISD school buses are equipped with RFID chip readers. As students get on and off the school bus they will hold their student ID badge to the RFID reader to log the time and location. This measure increases student safety by ensuring a reviewable record of all bus riders, particularly younger students who may accidently attempt to get off the bus at the wrong stop or fall asleep while riding.

Which photo is used for my student's ID badge?
Students will receive an ID badge at the beginning of the school year which utilizes their school photo from the prior academic year. If a student does not have a photo on file their photo will be taken the first week of school and utilized for the badge.

How is the student ID badge used for the bus?
SMCISD school buses are equipped with RFID chip readers. As students get on and off the school bus they will hold their student ID badge to the RFID reader to log the time and location. This measure increases student safety by ensuring a reviewable record of all bus riders, particularly younger students who may accidently attempt to get off the bus at the wrong stop or fall asleep while riding.

All secondary students are required to wear their student ID badge around their neck at all times while utilizing SMCISD provided transportation (school bus, district white fleet, chartered vehicles).

All elementary students are required to either wear their student ID badge around their neck or have it affixed to their backpack at all times while utilizing SMCISD provided transportation (school bus, district white fleet, chartered vehicles).

What if my student loses their ID badge?
Per the SMCISD Student Handbook: “In the event that a student misplaces or forgets their ID, they can visit their designated campus location for a replacement. The cost of a replacement ID is $5.00 to cover the expenses of associated supplies (card, lanyard, sleeve, and printing).”
Replacement student ID badges will inherit all RFID chip permissions & functions associated with the previous lost/misplaced student ID badge(s). Therefore, previous badges will not work for the purpose of school bus ridership or designated door reader entry (SMHS).
As a result of the aforementioned, students may not purchase multiple additional badges (spares).

Are students required to wear their student ID badge while attending after hours extra-curricular trainings?

Students will continue to wear their ID badge while in attendance, non-compliance will result in removal from the event.

All students attending extracurricular after school activities are required to wear their student ID badge around their neck for the duration of the event.

All students riding in any SMCISD vehicle to/from a SMCISD sponsored extracurricular event are required to wear their student ID badge around their neck or on their backpack.

Students who wish to sit in the designated “student section” at athletic events are required to wear their ID badge around their neck.

Students not in possession of a student ID badge or refusing to wear it around their neck:

Students who are not accompanied by a guardian/parent and are not in possession of their student ID badge or refuse to wear it around their neck will not be allowed entry to extracurricular events.

Students who are accompanied by a guardian/parent and are not in possession of their student ID badge or refuse to wear it around their neck will be required to stay within proximity of their guardian/parent throughout the duration of the event.

Students who remove their ID badge will be given the opportunity to correct the aforementioned. Further noncompliance will result in removal from the event.
Students who are actively participating in extracurricular performances or sporting events are not required to wear their student ID badges.

Does my student have to use the district issued lanyard?
All students will receive a San Marcos CISD lanyard with his or her student ID. They are not required to use this lanyard and may purchase a different lanyard or ID holder of your choosing (must be appropriate for school)
The only requirement is student IDs must be visibly worn on the upper part of the body.
