Dr. Monica Valadez
Monica Valadez received the value of service to others from a very early age. Both her parents were Mexican nationals, and she herself was born in Guanajuato, Mexico. Growing up in Central Texas and attending public schools in the United States, both afforded her the opportunity for an education at multiple levels, and the motivation to work in the service of students and families that faced many of the same barriers that she and her family experienced: language, culture, and isolation.
Valadez began her teaching career at Hernandez Elementary in Austin ISD and served as a teacher for 10 years, split between 1st grade and 4th grade. She earned her Masters in Educational Leadership in 2008 and her Doctorate in School Leadership in 2012 from Texas State University. In 2013, after working at UT Austin with Proyecto Maestría, and several years away from PK-12 schools, she accepted the position of Assistant Principal at De Zavala Elementary in SMCISD. Returning to her roots was a welcomed homecoming. She has gone on to serve SMCISD as a Community Liaison and a director of bilingual education.
The education she received from her parents and the formal education she received in public schools have provided her with the opportunity to serve students and families for over 20 years. Valadez continues to serve alongside many powerful warriors in public education, to highlight the stories, brilliance, and wisdom of our community's children, youth, and families.
Currently, she serves as Director of Multilingual Services and Community Engagement, directing services for several language programs, including Dual Language Immersion, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Languages Other Than English (LOTE). She also supports in the areas of student services, including Homeless Education, Migrant Education, Foster Care Education, and Military Connected, as well as family and community engagement.
